Who are Interac Japan?

Founded in 1972, Interac is the largest private provider of ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers) to Japanese public schools. ALTs with Interac works in elementary, junior high, and senior high schools throughout Japan.

What does an Interac ALT do?

A title coined by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), they are native-level English speakers working in Japanese classrooms. They work in elementary, junior high, and high schools throughout Japan, with many teachers assigned to teach in at least two school levels. Your job is two-fold: language instructor and cultural ambassador. These aspects are inseparable, and you will become an expert in both after a comprehensive initial training program.
  • Plan, produce, and deliver engaging language lessons based on the national MEXT curriculum, using approved textbooks, worksheets, and other materials.
  • Communicate in English with students both inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Provide valuable cultural insight into other cultures as a cultural ambassador.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities as directed by Interac.
  • Participate in ongoing training sessions and meetings, and other local activities.

What do I need to work for Interac in Japan?

Basic Requirements

As well as having the mental aptitude and a desire for the challenge of living and working overseas, to be eligible to become an Interac ALT, you must:

 

  • Be a native-level speaker of English
  • Have received an education conducted in English for at least 12 years
  • Have at least a bachelor’s degree in any subject from an accredited university
  • Be a team-player that is professional, flexible, cheerful, and energetic
  • Be under 60 years of age

While not required, it helps your chances if you:

  • Hold a driver’s license
  • Have teaching experience
  • Have a teaching qualification, e.g., CELTA, DELTA, and TEFL
  • Have studied a second language at school or university
  • Can speak some basic Japanese

Initial Money Requirements

For recruits arriving from overseas, you will need to have approximately 500,000 yen available to you in accessible cash (i.e. not credit card!) so you can cover costs associated with setting up your apartment and sustain yourself until the first payday.

For Domestic Applicants

If you currently reside in Japan you must hold a valid residence/visa status that allows you to live and work in Japan and possess a valid resident card or Certificate of Alien Registration (“gaijin card”) in addition to the base requirements. The main status of residence required to be an Interac ALT is Instructor, however you can also work if you hold a Permanent Resident, Spouse or Child of a Japanese National, Spouse or Child of a Permanent Resident, Special Permanent Resident, and Long Term Resident status.

Interac offer a gross annual salary of approximately ¥2.4 – ¥2.7 million per year.

You will work at Interac for a contract of one-year

 

Work Hours

Weekdays between 8:00am and 5:00pm.

 

Holidays and Leave

Obon (summer), New Year’s holidays, national holidays, and paid leave.

 

Working Visa

Visa sponsorship available (Applicants must meet all Immigration requirements)

 

Training

Initial training and regular on-going training provided.

 

Transportation Reimbursement

Commuting expenses reimbursed.

 

Health Insurance

Interac welcomes applications from all qualified candidates. Please note that if applying as a couple, both individual parties of the couple must apply and pass the necessary requirements separately. The Interac recruiting process is intended to only accommodate the applicants themselves, and Interac makes no guarantee that it can fulfill specific requests for placement, but will do its best to place couples into positions near each other. 
No. There is no application fee.
If successful, the necessary procedures for securing a Certificate of Eligibility to obtain a working visa for Japan for the applicant will be borne by Interac. Travel, postage, and other incidental costs incurred in dealing with the local Japanese embassy/consulate in the applicant’s home country are borne by the applicant.
No. Successful applicants pay for their own flights to Japan.
Assistance will be provided in obtaining single-occupancy housing.
Yes. It is entirely possible to have a comfortable lifestyle on the starting salary. It is a standard starting salary in the English-teaching industry in Japan.

Interac cannot provide support for nor guarantee housing availability for persons who would like to import personal pets such as dogs or cats. In all cases, the pet owner is responsible for knowing and complying with all applicable regulations.
